Growing Clean

It’s no secret–farming can be a little dirty. Like dirt under your nails, but also dirty like land use, water waste, pollution, and contaminants on your food. At Plenty®, we grow fresh, flavorful produce vertically indoors–so everything’s a little… cleaner. From a controlled, indoor environment to zero-pesticide greens on your table–it’s cleaner for the world and cleaner for you.

How We’re Growing Clean

Our planet is facing a changing climate and running out of farmable land just when we need it most. To feed a growing population, we need a whole new approach to farming. That’s where Plenty® comes in.

Compared to conventional farming, our Compton farm…

  • Has the potential to save millions of gallons of water per year
  • Can produce up to 350x more leafy greens per acre
  • Can grow an entire soccer field worth of produce in the size of a goal

By growing vertically indoors, Plenty® is able to dramatically reduce the natural resources required to farm at a commercial scale while also making it possible to grow where we used to think it was impossible, like in the center of a city or the middle of the desert.

How Plenty is Growing Clean

Cleaner For You

Growing indoors means your greens aren’t sprayed with pesticides, and they’re safe from pollution. By controlling the light, water, and nutrients the plants need, we can bring you produce when it’s at its tastiest, all year long.

By growing indoors in a clean environment, we don’t need to spray our greens with pesticides, which means 100% pesticide-residue free greens

Our greens are grown so clean, we (and you) don’t need to wash them. But no judgment if you still want to.

We keep a watchful eye over our greens to ensure they’re as clean as can be. Our controlled environment and shorter supply chain allows us to monitor and respond to pathogens quickly and efficiently.

Building a Cleaner Future

Every day, we’re working to make our food supply more secure while decreasing the impact that agriculture makes on the environment.

Less Land & Less Water

We want to do a lot with a little, so we built our farms to grow up, using less land to grow more produce. And when it comes to water, our Compton farm has the potential to save millions of gallons of water per year when compared with conventional agriculture and still feed millions of people.

Transportation

Unfun fact—a 2022 study found that the transportation of fruits and vegetables accounted for half of the overall carbon cost of the produce. But Plenty farms can be built anywhere so we can imagine a future where everyone can eat more locally.

Pollution & Uncontrolled Runoff

Unlike in outdoor farming, we have the ability to better monitor, optimize, and control what comes into and out of our indoor farms.

We’re always looking for innovations in other industries that affect our impact on the environment–like packaging and energy sources. These are complex challenges, but we know conserving natural resources is worth the effort.

Who We Are

We’re a company of scientists, farmers, business people, creatives, and even a few friendly robots.

What started over a decade ago at the University of Wyoming has spread across the US from a farm in Compton, California, to a 120-acre farming campus in Virginia, where we’ll continue to dream up a radically new way to grow crops.

“I felt that technology could help feed a lot of people, extend lives, fight environmental destabilization, and give land back to the natural landscape. Producing food is a good, honest pursuit, but the food system is complex and abstract. I hope that Plenty® can change that.”

Where We Farm

Laramie, Wyoming

The original Plenty® farm

This is Plenty’s research and development center, where each of our crops is first tested and perfected. We run thousands of tests to figure out the right levels of hydration, nutrients, and light to grow the very best plants indoors – exploring the outer bounds of what is possible for indoor farming. We take what we learn here and apply it to our full-scale farms.

Richmond, Virginia

The berry farm

Our strawberry campus in Virginia will be the world’s first indoor vertical farm campus—a group of vertical farms that all share resources. Our first farm on this land (opening 2024!) is designed to grow over 4 million pounds of delicious strawberries a year—even through the dead of winter. Soon after, we’ll add more farms to the campus, allowing us to grow up to 22 million pounds of produce a year, all on a plot of land a fraction of the size of Central Park.

FAQ

What we’re doing is new, so of course, there are questions. We have questions every day! Below you’ll find some of our most frequently asked questions and the best answers we have to date.

Plenty® uses vertical grow towers and an innovative lighting, water, and nutrient system to grow produce. By growing indoors, we can create an environment that can be fully controlled, delivering just the right amount of light, water, and nutrients plants need to be their best. Our technology allows us to use less space and water to grow more food and eliminates the need to spray pesticides onto the produce that consumers eat. Plenty Farms® grow significantly more produce per acre while using just a fraction of the land and water than conventional farms.

We have chosen not to obtain organic certification, but because of our unique indoor growing technology, we are able to control the growing environment in ways that even outdoor organic farms cannot. For example, the edible portion of the leafy greens that we sell to customers never comes in contact with any pesticides, whereas many organic farms spray and apply organic pesticides to the produce that their customers consume. Our leafy greens are truly pesticide-residue-free!
