Plant Science

Systems Supervisor

Laramie, WY

At Plenty, we’re on a mission to give people in local communities everywhere access to the freshest, most amazing tasting produce possible. And to do so in a way that’s better for the planet.

About Role

Plenty is seeking a Systems Supervisor who will manage systems and supervise team members in several modern, advanced-technology hydroponic farms.  This individual will oversee the maintenance, scheduling, and troubleshooting of state-of-the-art agricultural research environments and is ultimately responsible for ensuring accuracy within the collected data.

What You'll Do

  • Exercise judgement and implement necessary procedures to govern success of a team.

  • Perform administrative tasks for their immediate direct reports (e.g., approving time cards, conducting routine one-on-one meetings, performing performance reflections, coaching individuals on their personal career development, administering performance improvement plans, etc.).

  • With the guidance of a Data Scientist, work closely with the Plant Science (PS) team to fulfill established research goals on time and to specification.

  • Autonomously drive the team on routine efforts around systems management (e.g., ensuring environments are set-up and decommissioned according to the Plant Science timeline, working with third-party vendors to troubleshoot hardware/software issues, ensuring routine calibrations are being performed).

  • Ensure that routine quality assurance checks are performed (i.e., the data being collected from all farm environments is as accurate as possible).

  • Ensure that routine summary statistic reports are produced via common data software tools (e.g., using Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel to wrangle data and report on averages, minima/maxima, and time environments spent within specified range).

  • Manage an on-call rotation to address after-hour maintenance and farm emergencies.

  • Schedule team work shifts (both during business hours and on-call) and ensuring that system failures are addressed in a timely manner and communicated to the proper stakeholders.

  • When systems-related issues occur, conduct a root cause analysis to prevent problems from reoccurring

  • Ensure the completion of daily, weekly, and monthly checklists

  • Ensure that new and existing team members are adequately trained to perform their duties.

What We're Looking For

  • Motivated, tech-savvy individuals with analytical, problem solving, electrical, and/or do-it-yourself skills to oversee installation and maintenance of system instrumentation

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in controlled systems agronomy, or related field

  • 3-5 years of related Supervisorial experience

  • Experience with Microsoft Office and Google Suite required, along with a willingness to adapt and learn new software programs

  • Ability to work outside normal business hours (i.e., outside Monday-Friday 8am – 5pm)

  • Ability to quickly adapt to changing situations

  • Ability to effectively give and take direction

  • Demonstrated behaviors around process efficiency with core values of consistency, accuracy, and continuous incremental improvement

  • Humble, teachable team-player who is enthusiastic and hard-working
