Staff Electrical Engineer - Electrical Distribution Design

About Role

As the lead engineer for the electrical distribution system, you will be designing and implementing the 480V and medium voltage (4kV to 26kV) systems which power our farms and monitor our energy consumption. The design of these systems for robustness, energy efficiency, deployment efficiency and overall cost is critical to achieving our mission of improving quality of living by providing Plenty’s delicious produce to the world. In this role you will be part of a passionate and dynamic team that is developing new technology from the ground up and deploying it at a global scale.

What You'll Do

Next 12 Months

  • Lead medium voltage and 480V electrical system design, taking projects from early architecture through detailed design, construction and commissioning
  • Work with subsystem owners throughout the engineering team to define and document the power needs for each area of the farm
  • Help mechanical engineers and other electrical engineers on the team select components to achieve power quality requirements
  • Manage third party design engineers to handle detailed design of some portions of the electrical distribution
  • Work in 2D and 3D to design a system that optimizes for efficiency, cost and deployment speed
  • Work with drafters to develop all electrical drawings, panel schedules and schematics necessary for bidding and construction
  • Work with the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) for each farm to drive permit approval for the electrical system
  • Work with local utilities to size grid connections
  • Support the efforts of our business development team and our construction team in tariff and rate negotiation
  • Write equipment specifications and work with the purchasing team to purchase transformers, panels, meters, interconnects and relays
  • Define load shedding logic for meters and relays as part of farm level Design Failure Mode Effect Analysis (DFMEA) activities
  • Work with the construction team to manage contractors doing installation and validation of the electrical system
  • Proficient in coordination study of overcurrent protection devices
  • Work with backup generators and UPS for critical loads
  • Have working knowledge of DC and AC to DC converters

12 Months and Beyond

  • Build and lead the team responsible for electrical distribution system design for 100’s of farms globally

What We're Looking For

  • 10 years of experience designing 4 to 26kV and 480V electrical systems for unique applications
  • Experience managing vendors and third party designers
  • Experience managing a team is a plus
  • Strong understanding of the National Electrical Code and ability to come up to speed quickly on international regulations
  • Experience working with utilities on electrical system projects
  • Hands on experience with high voltage equipment
  • BS, MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering
  • PE stamp in California, PE stamp in others states is a plus
  • Highly collaborative mindset and strong communication skills
  • Experience with renewable energy projects is a plus
  • A belief in the value of great engineering documentation
