About the role

Plenty is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Platform group on our Software & Data Systems team.  You will be building features that will unlock the next generation of automated process design and execution, enabling our customers to be efficient in operating one of the world’s most sophisticated farming systems.  Our team builds and manages critical backend and frontend software and data systems used across the organization. You will identify needs, collect requirements, and build and test frontend components and software infrastructure used company-wide. 
You will use your experience building modern web experiences and your expertise in performance, architecture, and object-oriented design to push the boundaries of our platform. In this role, you will contribute to the advanced environment management in Plenty's grow spaces, while also amplifying the impacts of Growers, Manufacturing Engineers, and Production Engineers across multiple organizations.  You will work in a highly collaborative environment, partnering closely with fellow Engineers, Product Managers and Project managers across the Plenty team. You will be working on features to enhance the PlentyOS suite of applications, which powers the world’s largest indoor vertical farm and impacts the food shortage issues in the world. 

What you'll do

  • Build highly interactive web-based application UIs that can scale with application complexity
  • Create tools, libraries, and frameworks for other developers to build upon
  • Build front-end applications through appealing visual design 
  • Design, implement and maintain front-end and back-end components for our proprietary Farm Operating System
  • Understand the user application needs and requirements for products, along with Product Managers and other application users 
  • Write readable and testable code (Java/Python, React and Typescript) to deliver changes to applications 
  • Design and implement effective APIs
  • Collaborate with Product Managers, Backend Developers and cross functional teams to improve software, develop and deploy applications & customizations
  • Write technical documentation so others can easily dive into your code
  • Apply new technology and innovation to improve platform functionality
  • Deliver an outstanding experience for our customers

What you'll bring to the table

  • 5+ years of progressive software development experience, specifically experience developing Single Page Applications alongside working with backend components and databases
  • Education or experience equivalent to B.S. (or higher)  in Computer Science, Mathematics or other similar discipline 
  • Deep experience  with Typescript and React or a proven track record to be able to pick up new languages and master them quickly
  • You know how to write tests when you ship your code and thrive in doing so
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • You take joy in reviewing your peers’ code as it allows you to stay up to date, improve codebase consistency and share knowledge
  • Ability to be proactive and find answers when the task and/or project ahead is ambiguous
  • Balance between figuring things out on your own but also sharing where you are with the team and knowing when to ask for help – you’re a highly collaborative team player)
  • Experience developing APIs in Java or Python
