About Role

The engineering team at Plenty is on a mission to completely redesign the way humanity grows food in order to satisfy the nutritional needs of the world by making the highest quality produce available to everyone. Doing so requires us to reimagine farms by drawing upon technologies and methodologies from high volume manufacturing and integrating that with next-generation plant science research. To that end, we are seeking a Systems Engineer to lead the development and design of automation equipment in our farms. In this role you will be a leader in a highly cross functional, experienced and creative team building new kinds of farms which get the world the produce it needs now and into the future.

What You'll Do

  • Cross functional lead for automation product(s) from concept phase through to integration into production lines

  • Serve as overall product owner through all stages of development

  • Collaborate on developing the layout of production workstations and assembly lines

  • Collaborate with the stakeholders to establish product requirements (Plant Science, Manufacturing and Operations)

  • Ensure high fidelity BOM and cost tracking throughout product development

  • Establish timeline and cost estimates for prototyping and build

  • Manage project timeline, cost and project personnel needs

  • Coordinate and lead the execution of system validation and test plans

  • Provide regular updates to Program Management team on project status (timeline, resources, and budget)

  • Provide updates to engineering management team on status (issues/blockers, product capabilities/maturity, and key technical risks)

  • Coordinate with supply chain and build partners to ensure successful procurement and build

  • Host regular product team meetings and coordinate/track actions and deliverables

  • Host cross functional design reviews and key stages/gates of product development

  • Work with the Manufacturing Engineering Team to develop acceptance testing documentation

  • Collaborate with mechanical and controls engineers to design, prototype, test, and qualify product

  • Work with the Deployment team to hand off validated equipment to Operations

  • Identify and close/escalate gaps in scope and responsibility to ensure product success

  • Identify and close/escalate major risks in system or process capability of product

  • Identify and coordinate with key stakeholders on cross functional teams through all stages of product development

  • Ensure Plenty machines are of food safe design and follow hygienic best practices

What We're Looking For

  • Degree in Engineering or equivalent

  • 5 years industry experience in automation, manufacturing engineering, systems engineering, technical program management or similar

  • Experience leading automation equipment projects through full design lifecycle and implementation

  • History of building relationships with stakeholders and team members

  • Ability to empathize with “customers” of products

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Experience with Project Management Tools, Atlassian preferred

  • Experience with PLM Software, 3DX Preferred

  • Adaptive to managing scope in dynamic projects and shifting program objectives

  • Ability to flex between fine details and high level

  • Bias for action
