Staff Mechanical Design Engineer, Grow Containers

About Role

In this role, you will contribute to the success of plants at Plenty through well executed design and production of grow containers. Grow containers are the elements of the farm that carry our plants from seed to harvest and nurture their development. You will directly contribute to the success of Plenty through the success of our plants!

What You'll Do

  • Design plant growth containers for our automated controlled environment agriculture spaces

  • Gather requirements from and collaborate with automation equipment designers and plant scientists

  • Design hardware in CATIA or Solidworks for high volume manufacturing

  • Select the best materials and fabrication methods for your designs and oversee their manufacturing

  • Develop FMEA’s, specifications and traceable test plans against which to test your designs

  • Deploy your work to research and production farms, incorporating field feedback into the next product lifecycle

  • Mentor and manage another engineer working on adjacent projects

  • 10% travel to vendors and farm sites expected

What We're Looking For

  • Four year degree (or higher) in mechanical engineering or a closely related engineering discipline

  • 8+ years of experience working as a mechanical engineer with consideration given for applicants holding advanced degrees

  • Experience with a broad range of manufacturing and fabrication technologies

  • Experience selecting engineering materials using first principles and independent research

  • A track record of taking designs from concept to steady state customer support and mentoring other engineers

  • Experience leading all phases of the product development cycle from requirement gathering through validation, manufacturing and customer support

Food Safety and Regulatory Requirements

  • Design farm components in compliance with internal food safety and sanitation guidelines

  • Comply with all Plant, State and Federal OSHA, EPA, FDA, HACCP, and SQF regulations

  • Submit design work for regulatory approval where necessary
