About Role

The Analytical Chemist will be responsible for developing and applying methods to address flavor and nutrition research for Plenty. This role will be part of the Product Quality & Performance Lab, a creative and motivated team supporting R&D in crop and product development. The Analytical Chemist will coordinate the completion of sample analysis in support of cross-functional projects and development of novel analytical techniques. Responsibilities include development and operation of quantitative analytical workflows, data generation and management, extraction optimization with automation, sample progress tracking, and maintenance of laboratory equipment and instrumentation. It will be critical to stay current with the newest instrumentation and chemometric methodologies that would aid Plenty in accomplishing our mission to bring delicious, nutritious, accessible produce to people around the world.

What You’ll Do

Research:

  • Develop, perform, and optimize quantitative targeted analytical workflows in numerous plant species using chromatography and spectroscopy techniques.

  • Interpret and report on chromatography and spectrometry data using integration, deconvolution, and other cheminformatics approaches.

  • Operate and maintain analytical instrumentation such as ion chromatograph, mass spectrograph, and infrared spectrograph.

  • Coordination, management, and tracking of lab samples for analysis on multiple platforms to support cross-functional research projects.

  • Identify new technologies for rapid measurement of key quality indicators.

  • Support the development of extraction techniques and improve throughput with automation.

  • Support the development of data collection and management tools to support lab functions and productivity.

  • Keep a stocked, clean, and orderly laboratory to promote safety and productivity.

Supervision:

  • Supervise technical staff to assist in research efforts as needed.

  • Support and promote safety.

  • Develop, train, and evaluate performance of employees on a continuous basis.

Collaboration/Communication:

  • Maintain collaborative working relationships with other Plant Science and business departments at Plenty.

  • Establish collaborative relationships with other researchers in the field through attendance of conferences, symposia, and workshops.

  • Occasional domestic and international travel will be required.

General:

  • Keep an up-to-date digital lab notebook and contribute to SOPs.

  • Follow Company policies and practices while representing Plenty in an ethical and business-like manner in all interactions with employees, governmental agencies, growers, customers, etc.

What We’re Looking For

Qualifications:

  • M.S. or B.S. with 3-5 years of practical experience in analytical chemistry, metabolomics, flavor chemistry, nutrition, and/or plant biochemistry.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and perform targeted quantitative analytical techniques including sample preparation, instrument operation, and data analysis.

  • Practical experience and theoretical knowledge of ion chromatography, mass spectrometry, and molecular spectroscopy.

  • Proficient with various extraction techniques for plant metabolites.

  • Experience with chemometric analysis, data management,  and programming tools.

  • Excellent statistical, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Knowledge of non-destructive analytical techniques.

  • A hard-working, proactive, and self-motivated individual.

  • Ability to work in a startup environment with rapidly developing goals and timelines.

Food Safety Requirement

Comply with all Plant, State and Federal OSHA, EPA, FDA, HACCP, and SQF regulations.
